The arts impact people in different ways. No matter how, it usually leaves a lasting impression. The following people were asked to share a memory of how the arts helped them because they represent a range of life experiences.
Music has always been therapeutic for me when I’m down or angry. It’s always made me feel better to listen to music loud in the car or play my flute. I taught private lessons for awhile but I just don’t really have time anymore.
My love of poetry during my teens put things in perspective. I took to writing poetry when my mom died. Music of my youth were songs known during the time my mom died were helpful. We all tend to go back in time to a specific moment whether good or bad when listening to specific songs. My mom died a short time after JFK was assassinated.
Simply put, creative art was a survival mechanism. It helped me survive a verbally abusive and lonely childhood. I was very isolated, but I had my imagination to cope with difficult times. It gave me dreams to hope for. As an adult I chose to be a professional actor and singer, my biggest talents and skills. Even when life became chaotic, I used my talents and skills to stay connected to people. I am doing well now, and I find I use all the hard times I have been through, all the coping skills I have through the creative art to help others. I am thankful.
About Hearts Make the Arts
This website is an educational project that is close to my heart (no pun intended) and was created in support of my MA degree. The arts will always be vital to society and the overall health of humanity in communities worldwide. This is why sharing these stories is so important. Compassion and empathy are the heart of connection and the arts enrich that connection deeply.
From the mediums of music, art, dance, poetry, film and the organizations/individuals that bring these arts to life in ways that are meaningful and therapeutic, there is no better feeling than knowing someone’s day is brighter and better because of the arts. By individuals and organizations working together, the arts are a powerful tool to heal the mind, body and soul. The aim is that these stories leave you inspired and your heart a little fuller.
